The Archaeological Site of Scolacium presents the history of the ancient city of Skylletion, founded by Greek colonists in the 6th-5th century BC and later established as a Roman colony under the name Scolacium. The area, once owned by the Massara and Mazza families, shows evidence of human presence dating back to the Palaeolithic era. The Roman colony was founded in 123-122 B.C., organized through an agricultural land distribution system (centuriazione), and reached its peak during the reign of Emperor Nerva. Notable monuments include the central public square of the Roman city, featuring rare brick paving, the Curia, the Capitolium, a 3,500-seat theatre, the only Roman amphitheatre in Calabria, baths, aqueducts and necropolises. This site was gradually abandoned in the 7th-8th centuries AD due to worsening environmental conditions and populations movements. However, it remained active until the 12th century, as evidence by the impressive Norman basilica. The on-site museum displays excavation finds, Roman sculptures and other significant artefacts. The visit also includes the 1934 oil mill, a remarkable example of industrial archaeology.
