Grikanta is an Italian-Greek Folk music group that performs South-Italian traditional songs with linguistic influences from the ancient Greek dialect, called Griko. It was formed in early 2015 in Thessaloniki by Pierpaolo Sicuro, a musician and musicologist known for his contribution to the traditional music of Salento (Southern Italy). The music group consists of six members from diverse musical backgrounds. The name "Grikanta" comes from the words "griko" (or “grecanico”,the Greek dialect of Italy) and "canta"(meaning to sing). Grikanta's music combines the melodic qualities of the Greek dialect with the powerful rhythms of Pizzica, a type of music traditionally used as a remedy for spider bites in southern Italy.
